There has been a fishing community in Hastings for over a thousand years and many of its fishermen have family ties that span hundreds of years of life at sea. Today’s fleet is proud of its commitment to sustainability, protecting the local fisheries for generations to come.

Meet Rolland and his Crew

Rolland is an experienced fisherman with a strong family tradition in the trade. With three fishing boats and over 25 years of experience, he's well-versed in the challenges and nuances of the industry.

His background suggests a deep connection to the craft, passed down through generations. This heritage gives him unique insights and skills that have been honed over time, making him a seasoned and knowledgeable fisherman.

Benefits of Buying Locally

1. Freshness and Quality

  • Shorter Supply Chain: Local fish are caught and delivered to market more quickly than imported fish, ensuring they are fresher and of higher quality.

  • Better Taste: Fresher fish often taste better because they haven’t been frozen or transported long distances.

    2. Supporting the Local Economy

  • Economic Growth: Purchasing local fish helps sustain the livelihoods of local fishermen and businesses, keeping money within the community.

  • Job Creation: By supporting local fisheries, you contribute to job creation in the local fishing industry.

    3. Environmental Benefits

  • Reduced Carbon Footprint: Local fish don't require long-distance transportation, which reduces the environmental impact of shipping and cold storage.

  • Sustainable Practices: Local fishermen are often more invested in sustainable fishing practices, as they rely on the long-term health of local waters.

4. Traceability and Transparency

  • Knowing the Source: When you buy local, you can often learn more about where and how the fish were caught, giving you greater confidence in the quality and sustainability of your food.

  • Fewer Middlemen: With a direct supply chain, there’s less opportunity for fraud or mislabelling, ensuring you get what you pay for.

    5. Seasonal Variety

  • Eating in Season: Buying local fish encourages consumption of species that are in season, which can introduce you to a variety of fish and reduce overfishing of popular species.

    6. Cultural and Community Connection

  • Supporting Tradition: Purchasing local fish helps maintain fishing traditions and cultural practices within the community.

  • Community Ties: Buying locally often fosters a sense of community and connection between consumers and producers, enhancing community relationships.

    7. Health Benefits

  • Fewer Preservatives: Local fish are less likely to be treated with preservatives or other chemicals used in long-distance shipping, leading to a healthier choice for consumers.

By choosing local fish, you make a positive impact on your health, your community, and the environment.

Meat from the supermarket, which is frequently praised for being a cost-effective and convenient option, has some hidden extras. The meat that is sold in many supermarkets comes from factory farms, where the animals don't always live lavish lives. This can bring about meat that is somewhat of a given down access quality and taste. In addition, supermarket meat frequently undergoes a transformation that includes the addition of preservatives, additives, and even a splash of water to add volume. This not only affects the flavour and quality, but it could also be bad for your health.

We pride ourselves in buying the meat from our local butcher, Robert, from London Road Butchers, Bexhill. He sources the meat from Prinkle Farm, Hailsham, making the meat fresher and the journey from the farm to your plate considerably shorter.

Supermarket meat is packaged in a factory and will sit on the shelf until someone buys it or the date runs out.

Here he is, preparing some minced beef for us, which is far more superior than the one from the supermarket.

With butcher’s meat, your meat will most likely be cut while you wait, or the butcher will have pre-prepared cuts that very morning. This level of freshness is hard to compete with.

Whilst butchers may be more expensive, you'll purchase products in the knowledge that you're supporting your local economy.
